South Baymouth
This town is the point where South Bay joins Lake
Huron, and is the departure point for the ferries to Tobermory on the Bruce
peninsula. The original name for the town was Sagradawawong or "the outlet"
based on its location at the mount of South Bay. In the 1880s the town became
an important fishing station on the Great Lakes. The first public building was
the church, built in 1890 to serve both Anglican and Presbyterian
congregations. Some of the original homes built for the fishermen are still
standing. In 1932, the first ferry service from Tobermory was begun, bringing
tourists and their automobiles to the Island. Sightseeing
